Mermaid Stretch

I just got back from New Zealand a few days ago, which was so beautiful and warm, and I got to enjoy lots of beaches and water, so I figured it would be a great time for a mermaid-themed stretch! And what better spot than at SALT Fitness - we all know mermaids love saltwater! And of course, I am wearing my mermaid patterned leggings.

This is an active, moving stretch, so I have a video to demonstrate! Take your time through the changes and do what feels best for you - as a mermaid would, go with the flow!

To start, sit on the ground with your knees bent in front of you and your weight shifted slightly to one side - like you're a mermaid! Reach the arm on that side out to the side with a slight bend in the elbow, then lean over and reach your other arm long up and overhead. Think of keeping your chest open to the front, so your side and armpit face the ceiling.

Take a counter stretch by switching the arms, while keeping the lower body in the same position. Return to the first stretch, but this time, continue the arc of your upper arm toward the ground as you rotate your chest toward the floor. This part is called the "sleeping mermaid!" I think this is such a comfortable pose to rest in, and with every exhale, try to sink deeper into the release of your muscles.

Then repeat on the other side! I hope you feel reinvigorated and a little bit magical and mystical - like a mermaid!
